From Magento's technical limitations to steady SEO growth: a promotion case study for a plant store in Germany

Promoting a large online store operating across several European markets takes more than quality content optimization; it needs a solid technical foundation too. When a site runs on Magento, even small changes can ripple across thousands of pages. That's why promoting projects like this in organic search calls for a comprehensive approach and close collaboration between SEO specialists and developers. In this case study, we explain how systematic technical optimization, followed by focused content work, helped grow organic traffic, AI-driven referrals, sales and revenue for Dutch-Bulbs in the German market.

Dutch-Bulbs: exclusive plants from Holland

Dutch-Bulbs B.V. specializes in selling flower bulbs, perennials, seeds and other gardening products directly from Dutch growers. The company ships to more than 30 European countries, including Germany, Austria, France, Italy and others.

The project's main goals

When the client came to Sprava Agency, the goal was to increase seasonal sales and beat the previous year's results for the same period through comprehensive SEO promotion, growth in organic traffic, and improved visibility on Google Germany.

Beyond that, the plan was to strengthen brand recognition and authority by developing expert content, including increasing how often the company gets mentioned in responses from AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and others.

Stages of SEO promotion and the work completed

The partnership with the client unfolded in two stages. In the first stage, we focused on fixing the technical issues limiting the site's indexing, crawlability and search visibility.

The main focus was on resolving systemic errors, optimizing page load speed, and building a solid technical foundation for the SEO work to follow. Because of how Magento's architecture is built, implementing our SEO recommendations required close collaboration with the development team, rolling out changes step by step, and monitoring their impact on the site.

Once the critical technical issues were resolved and the project had a stable technical base, the team moved into the second stage of SEO promotion: comprehensive content optimization based on the keyword set we'd built. The main focus here was on optimizing commercial and category pages, updating metadata, headings, copy and content structure to match what German users were actually searching for. This approach improved page relevance for the target queries and laid the groundwork for steady growth in organic visibility, rankings and traffic.

Work on the project started in November-December 2025 and continues today.

Results of the partnership

Over the first half of 2026, Germany, the market we focused most of our attention on, delivered some of the strongest growth of any European market in the portfolio. Compared to the same period in 2025, active users grew by 51.2% and new visitors by 41.5%, pointing to a significant expansion in reach and successful engagement with a new audience. At the same time, sessions with engagement rose by 19.7% and purchases by 38%, driving a 27.9% increase in the company's revenue.

Referrals from ChatGPT grew by 157.1%. On top of that, the site is already picking up traffic from Google AI, Gemini, Copilot and other AI services, though their share remains modest for now.

Project Manager at
Sprava Agency

An important feature of this project was that all the technical SEO fixes were implemented by a developer on the client's side.

Our team handled the technical audit, identified the issues, and prepared detailed technical specifications. From there, changes went through development, testing and a final review by our SEO specialists.

This way of working required constant coordination between teams, careful attention to every task, and quality control over each implementation. At the same time, the timeline for individual technical fixes depended on how busy the client's development team was, which meant some planned work ran behind the original deadlines. This slowed the rollout of the SEO strategy somewhat and required us to keep adjusting priorities, but it didn't stop us from reaching the results we'd planned for.

Conclusion

Dutch-Bulbs' results confirm that Magento's technical quirks are no obstacle to effective SEO. With the right priorities, systematic implementation and comprehensive optimization, it's entirely possible to significantly boost a site's visibility, reach a new audience, and increase sales, even in highly competitive European markets.
